Goal Setting. Yes or No?
Have you set your Goals for 2022?
What is goal setting?
Tony Robbins believes "Effective goal setting lets you measure progress, overcome procrastination and visualize your dreams. If you don’t know what you want to accomplish, you can’t create a plan to get there. Setting goals is the vehicle that will drive you to your desired destination “
Zig Ziglar says ““You need a plan to build a house. To build a life, it is even more important to have a plan or goal.”
Bill Copeland believes “The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.”
People have different views about setting goals. Some live by them and others don’t see the point. I am a goal setter out of necessity. I’m a procrastinator and will always go to the task that I enjoy first, it takes me longer (because I get joy from it) and I run out of time to do the tasks that are important but are tougher. However, I also have a strong belief that it’s not the PLAN that provides the power, it’s the PLANNING. For me it’s the process of thinking about what I want to achieve, how I’m going to achieve it, why I want to achieve it, where my support is going to come from and what the hurdles will be so that I can counteract them. The end product – the Plan, doesn’t matter as much. It’s the reflecting, considering & identifying the process that will help me achieve it.
After that, it’s about motivation. You can have the most amazing plan. Even place it on your wall! But if you never look at it or have a reason to use it as a dynamic document, it becomes a total waste of time! I have a Motivational Planner that ensures my mindset is on achieving the goal. It means I look at my plan, modify my plan as I go and am more focussed on achieving it. It also gives me so much more purpose and therefore my celebrations are way more meaningful!
Personal Excellence Magazine believes there are 7 reasons to set goals.
1. Take control of your life
2. Get maximum results
3. Creates laser focus
4. Creates accountability
5. Motivates you
6. Be the best you can be
7. Live your best life

All of these are so very true! However, it must work for YOU! Find what motivates and works for you specifically. I like a Plan that has checkpoints along the way, so that I am achieving things while working towards my ultimate goal. I like to include celebration points, so that I am being rewarded for my short term goal achievements. I also like to be very specific about WHY I want to achieve the goal and I write myself a script of why I’m doing it and what will happen if I DON’T achieve it! When I’m feeling unmotivated, that script jumps in my brain! It spurs me on! I’m also one of those people that it has to look pretty, detailed and with colour – I love colour! But I don’t mind this because it means I spend a bit of time on the WORDS and the INTENT of the goal, which fixes my mindset. Even if I never look at the plan again, I know it back to front and inside out! I know what I have to do!
If I never go through the process, reflect on what and why I want to achieve, or if I never consolidate that knowledge through writing it down, spending time to make it look good, I am way less likely to achieve my goal. And that possibility quadruples if I share my planning process with someone else. Hearing myself talk about it makes it stick in my brain!
Without a goal I may eventually get there, but I may have left Wollongong to get to Brisbane and ended up going via Perth to get there! I have no time for that!
